Joey's Song
The father of a little guy who died unexpectedly last year of epilepsy threw his heart and soul into this one. He started a foundation in his son's name to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation, and kicked it off by releasing a record called "Joey's Song." Actually, two records, one of kids' music and one for the elders. The list of contributing musicians is really remarkable. Alecia Nugent, Crash Test Dummies, David Lowery, Freedy Johnston, Iron and Wine, Joe Henry, Kate Rusby, Lee Roy Parnell...and that's only skimming halfway down the alphabetical-by-first-name roster. (See the entire list here: http://www.joeyssong.org/artists.php) I mean, I'm not surprised that I answered the fellow's graciously sincere e-mail promptly and offered up a recording ("I Believe In You," by Bob Dylan) -- I say yes to almost everything -- but Joe Henry, the busiest hipster on the planet? You've got to give this dad some serious respect. What principled tenacity. What good musical taste. What dexterity in bypassing managers. Buy the thing here: http://www.joeyssong.org/index.php. (On a personal note -- I think my contribution to it is strong. If you haven't heard me try my hand at moody, textural Christian faith music, you may be pleasantly surprised, as was I!)

I just ordered a copy. Gotta be up for hearing an atheist sing one of Dylan's very best Christian songs. (Then again, a good song is a good song, right?)
Note this special offer on the Joey's Song website:
Pledge $75 or more
LIMITED REWARD 5 of 5 remaining
A Joey’s Song Limited Edition Tee-Shirt, A Joey’s Song CD and a meet and greet with Robbie Fulks when you attend one of his shows.
We have met and greeted Robbie on several occasions for no cost beyond the price of admission, but you would probably get some special treatment for $75...perhaps you would be allowed to buy him a beverage or dust off his chair...
Robbie's not an atheist. He just thinks he is.
