<description>He attached a sketched map to this one, but it didn't really turn out too good. Anyway, he's comparing notes with his brother Robin, now...

hope you can make out this map. Robin, I'm showing 3 bomb shelters in the street. They must have been demolished approx. 1948, probably as a health hazard, I can't understand why some people had to use these kind of places as a public toilet, especially when no-one cleaned them. Uggh.
At the other end of our side of Leckethill Street lived the Wright family. (also the Gilmour boys). I was pals with Robert Wright, Robin's pal was Johnny Wright. I think it was their mother who took us to the swanky picture house. Interesting story about Mrs. Wright, a wee woman. Apparently she was either abandoned as a child, or an orphan, anyway she was brought up by a fairly well-to- do woman. Every Christmas she and the boys( I think the father died in the war) went to this old lady's house for presents and the dinner. One year she took us ( I think just Robin and me) with them. I somehow think it was in the West end of Glasgow, I remember the black painted pailings on the garden wall at the front of the house.( this was quite unusual as most pailings and other metal fittings were commandeered for the war effort). I'm sure there was snow, and carollers came round the doors and the old lady gave them some money. Anyway I also remember a traditional Christmas dinner, just like the ones you used to read in the Dandy and Beano, a steaming turkey and a Christmas pudding with icing on top, and some holly. Far more than I our parents could afford. I think that was the only time I had turkey until we were in Canada.
Another story, Robert Wright and I were in the Wolf cubs, and we both went to the Scout hut each week. One night when we left the hut, we were surrounded by hooligans who started roughing us up a bit. Robert was a bit more prepared to put up some resistance, but I legged it home to get my Dad. We rushed back to find they had tied Robert to a lamp post, but he was unhurt.
Now the Wilsons. They were an elderly couple (in their seventies I would say) who lived in the flat directly opposite ours.Robin and I spent some nights in their house, not sure why, but it was a change. The real fun was when their grand-daughters came, they would be a few years older than us.They seemed to enjoy playing rough and tumble with us, and I seem to remember it got kinda physical too. I remember a lot of the action took place on the recess bed, or did I have fantasy dreams even then. Up to that point girls were part of the surroundings that came with Mum and Dad, going to school, sunshine and rain, falling into puddles and things like that. Well now I had a nerve ending somewhere at the back of my skull which vaguely suggested that girls might be a bit more important for some reason or another. Yes I know, I would only be about ten years old, but the war years had brought some urgency into our young lives, and who was to know how long it would be until we trod that path again, braving the ills and arrows of modern life and all its vagaries.
